Stop demolition of the Hackbridge railway bridges

Please sign the petition to stop the demolition of our bridges.

The 100 Acre and Irrigation bridges over the railway north of Hackbridge have been earmarked for demolition in May by Network Rail. This is despite the key role both these Victorian bridges can play in providing public access to the newly restored Beddington Farmlands when it opens.  We understand Network Rail's assessment shows it would be less expensive to maintain the bridges than demolish them.

This is short term thinking.  It risks squandering the vast environmental opportunity that this area of green space - three times the size of Hyde Park - presents right at the heart of the Wandle Valley Regional Park.

The emerging Neighbourhood Plan being prepared by the Hackbridge community identifies the bridges as a "vital link with the past and also a necessary link to the future". It is "concerned to ensure than none of the bridges are demolished and all are opened up for public use".

We call on Network Rail to call off the bridges demolition and allow Wandle Valley Regional Park Trust and Sutton Council to find a long term solution which secures their role in providing public access to Beddington Farmlands.
